What There Is To Know About Fiber Optic Internet

by:TBT     2020-08-04
Speed has always been an issue in internet connections and the invention of optical fibers have solved this problem. Fiber optic internet connection beats wireless connection by a large magnitude, leaving the latter's technology in the void of obsolescence. In this era, speed in obtaining and exchanging the relevant information is a need.
Optical fiber has been around for some time. It is a white, transparent glass strand that is made of silica and measures just a little wider than the human hair. Optical fibers serve a lot of uses in several industries today and are widely used in fiber-optic communications because of their efficiency in transmitting over long distances at a higher bandwidth.
This technology is known for transmitting large amounts of information from place to place. Among the major benefits of its discovery is the great improvement in telephone communications and the internet. Through this little strands of glass were key development of this generation. It also has a significant help in materializing the information revolution.
Viewed in a smaller scale, a single optical fiber alone can transmit a massive amount of three trillion bits per second (bps). Compared to the regular wireless connection which transmits only two million bps, these strands are way ahead by millions. With this edge, fiber optic internet connection is one good innovation.
One classic example of this technology's advantage is the case where you are to download the whole Library of Congress into your personal computer. If you are going to download it using the old dial-up modem, which transfers data at a rate of fifty-six thousand bps, you would be storing the whole data in a staggering eighty-two years! Meanwhile, if you use the wireless connection which transfers two million bps, you will be downloading everything in more or less than two years.
But if you use fiber optic technology in your internet, you will not be having any trouble transferring that much data at all. This three-trillion-bits-per-second-capable technology will transfer all the contents of the Library of Congress in just a matter of forty-eight seconds. Imagine how much information you can transfer in an hour.
However, the question still remains: is it available? As of now, improvements are being made to optimize the capacity of these little but amazing strands of silica. What these companies offer however is an optical fibers system which offers ten billion bps. This may be smaller than the aforementioned three trillion bps but it can still transfer the whole Library data in just four hours.
Aside from its promise of speed and astonishing potential, optical fibers cost cheaper than traditional copper wires. When compared in equivalent length, the former exudes tremendous edge over the latter in its quality and capacity. Optical fibers are thinner and thus, a lot of them can be bundled together. These make them less prone to signal degradation.
Light-speed connection is no longer just a dream. With the advent of fiber optic internet, you can now transfer unbelievable amount of data into your PC in just a matter seconds. This new technology will without a doubt break new borders and bring new solutions to the world.
