A Leased Line is a type of telecommunication line connecting two distant places. It is a permanent fiber optic cable
set up between two points. Usually, these lines are used by companies to connect geographically far-away offices. It can also be referred to as a dedicated line, a data line or a private line. Though these lines are set up and maintained by telecom companies, they can't be used as telephone lines.
The connection speeds on these data lines can vary from 64 kilobits per second (Kbps) to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), while the bandwidth depends on the quantity of data used, number of users using the line and the number of applications running simultaneously. Unlike normal dial-up connections, a leased line connection is always active and the information sent through this line travels along dedicated secure channels, reducing the blockage that occurs in shared networks.
The service requires a fixed line to be connected at the place for which the user pays an annual rental fee to the Internet service provider. The line is a 24-hour constant service with support and is aimed to offer a structure that ensures a user is able to connect to his/her host server or internet quickly and directly at all given times. A separate router or hub should also be installed at the location to provide the gateway for access to the Internet.
Leased lines are an ideal solution for businesses that require continuous communication throughout a day. Another benefit of these lines, which makes it ideal especially for business purposes, is that they can be used to connect directly to the internet or just to network the offices.
